Eliza stared.
Jessie winning the bid for herself hadnât made sense.
But this? Winning it for Eliza? That was Jessie 101.
âI had told Jessie to bid on something for me. Told her I had two hundred bucks saved up for it,â she said, shaking her head. Eliza knew better than to blindly trust that Jessie would bid on a new wetsuit from the scuba shop or something equally useful. This was Elizaâs fault for giving the woman free rein.
âOh, this cost more than the two hundred bucks you gave her.â
Great. Did Jessie expect Eliza to pay her the extra it had cost to win the bid?
Elizaâs heart did a dive, and she asked weakly, âHow much did this date with you cost?â She held her breath as she awaited his answer.
Travis looked like he didnât want to give it. âThree hundred and forty dollars.â
Eliza jumped to her feet. âThree hundred andââ
Oh, that woman was going to get it.
Eliza snatched her phone from her back pocket and immediately called Jessie. They were going to clear this up right then and there.
Travis looked like he didnât know if he should be there for this conversation, so he wandered back over to his baseboards, put some headphones on, and busied himself on the opposite side of the room.
Just to be safe, Eliza stepped out into the hall.
âHello?â Jessie sounded so sweet and unassuming, youâd never know what really lay under the surface until it was too late. Even now, Eliza was still learning.
âI donât have three hundred and forty dollars to pay for a date that I didnât want to go on in the first place,â Eliza said, skipping any pleasantries.
A pause.
âIs this Eliza?â
Really, she was going to play it that way?
âYou know who this is, Jessie. And I told you two hundred dollars. I wanted a hat or an ice cream cake. Maybe a new snorkel.â
A small chuckle. âI see that youâve finally talked with Travis. I wondered how long that would take. Longer than it should have, really.â
Eliza groaned. âJes-sieâ¦â
âYou really canât blame me, dear. You werenât specific about what you wanted from the auction. And donât worry about the excess money. Consider it an early Christmas present.â
âYou mean the holiday that is still seven months away?â
âFine. A late Christmas present.â
Eliza paced the hallway and rubbed her eyebrows. âIs it one that is exchangeable?â
She felt bad even asking it. Jessie must have desperately wanted this for Eliza if she was willing to pay one hundred and forty dollars of her own money for it. But stillâ¦dating and romance and all thatâ¦it wasnât something that had ever been in the cards for Eliza. She didnât have time for it.
Not only that, but the memory of what Craig had done⦠It still stung. Of course, that was nothing compared to what her mother had done to her father.
And that was the dealbreakerâshe wouldnât allow herself to do the same thing to someone else.
A long pause from the other end of the line.
âIâm afraid not, dear. This one is for keeps.
